Refurbishment
In modern housing refurbishment in London, the vast majority of home owners are looking for more space and light. In this project Granit Chartered Architects has turned a neglected terraced property from black swan to the belle of the ball.
Granit’s client wanted to transform their house into a modern family home capable of accommodating its growing family and they also wanted something unexpected to add another dimension to their property.
The result is a building that combines both modern and traditional design with a solid link to a home environment, balancing openness and modernity with a sense of warmth and tradition.
The remodelling took several forms. An extension was designed at the rear to form a new kitchen, dining and garden room. A glass roof strip was incorporated above the contemporary kitchen that aims to break down the solidity of the structure. The rear of the extension developed further on this theme with frameless glass doors connecting the reconfigured internal space with the garden.
The loft was enlarged to form an additional bedroom, bathroom and office space. The remainder of the property was fully refurbished with bespoke furnishings tailored to meet the clients’ needs.
At the heart of the property an atrium provides the unexpected, a hub to the circulation space that delivers light to a once dim interior.
