Clarke and Whalen Architects Ltd

We have been designing and project managing residential and commercial projects since our practice was
founded in 1979. Whilst the majority of our work has been for individual private clients, we have also worked
for developers, local authorities, and as consultants to English Heritage.

We have no predetermined design style, responding in each project to the client’s tastes, requirements and
the setting of the project. We generally prefer to use traditional materials because of the harmonious way in
which they weather into the landscape, but we always try to employ them to bring delight to a building and to
lift it out of the commonplace.

We have established a reputation for the care and skill which we exercise in designing and realising
commissions in sensitive locations. These have included Listed Buildings, sites in Conservations Areas, Green
Belt locations and in Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. We have won awards from civic societies and from
the Hertfordshire Association of Architects for our work in conservation settings, and have undertaken a
research project on behalf of English Heritage
