Extension
This project designed a new rear extension and extensive refurbishment of a semi-detached house in Chiswick, London. The extension allows the ground floor to open out into the garden, which was re-modelled at the same time, to create a large kitchen and dining space.
The new extension is conceived as a room with openings that frame the garden outwards and the existing house upwards. New rooflights align with existing openings, to create two viewing corridors to the garden. The structure is an archway of render that contains large glass and timber panels.
The white render of the exterior walls act as a blank canvas for the projection of moving shadows from the garden that change throughout the day. Inside, holes in the roof plane are cut alongside holes in the brick walls to express their material quality; rough textured bricks versus the pristine holes of the rooflight.
This project was completed while Pippa Nissen was partner at Nissen Adams.
