Refurbishment
Our plan is to remove the eternity panels back to structure and overclad with a continuous sheet pre-patinated copper cladding with horizontal folded seam. This is a traditional material worked using traditional artisan techniques that relates back to the industrial heritage [scrap metal yard] of the site and the area. It has a natural hue that would enhance the existing brick materials in both The Observatory and neighboring buildings and enliven the corner of the street.
The intention is to remove the entrance doors and two side bays of existing curtain wall and replace with two pairs of glass sliding doors forming a draft lobby. This allows a fully compliant DDA entrance sequence, improves the thermal performance of the entrance screen and allows a visual link into the depth of the entrance hall. A more transparent street frontage would help the currently intimidating corner by offering greater surveillance and diffused internal lighting washing onto the pavement.
The first floor glazing is a purely aesthetic move proposed to lift the tired curtain wall by hanging a strip of toughened glass from the high-level transfer beam. This screen does not challenge the existing architecture but provides a subtle veil top the building that could receive acid etching or screen-printed artwork. The element also provides a degree of solar shading and privacy to the first floor accommodation and will preclude the requirement for current internal blinds.
