The brief involved combining, extending and alterations to two Grade II listed terraced houses in the Mayfield Valley, Sheffield. After detailed negotiations with Sheffield Planning and Conservation Departments permission was granted for a complimentary extension and internal remodelling.
Traditional British cottages often have an unique asset - the garden. But in this case the garden is in two parts the larger is positioned on the opposite side of the road and the other, a long narrow piece of land, runs from the rear of the property to a width of two metres. Entry to the house was only from the front and with no direct access to either garden. Opening up the house from the kitchen extension by way of french doors enabled the house to flow into the rear garden and benefit from sunlight and new views of the open countryside - allowing the house to breathe.
The internal spaces were also opened to flow into one another and form new relationships and uses whilst retaining the innate character of the house. Detailing is crisp and provides a modern twist to the traditional elements, skirtings are recessed and door frames have no architraves to echo the simple ethos.
