Temasek Polytechnic is a ‘city of learning’ for 11,500 students with 1500 staff, encompassing Schools of Applied Science, Technology, Business, and Design, in a 30 hectare landscaped park between Tampines New Town and Bedok Reservoir at the eastern end of the island of Singapore.
A raised entrance Plaza, enclosed by the horseshoe-shaped administration building and opening toward Tapines Avenue, is the focus of the campus and a public forum representing the Polytechnic’s open relationship with the community. A large ‘window’ through the horseshoe frames panoramic views across a triangular garden to the reservoir. A covered footbridge connects the Plaza to bus shelters on either side of Tapines Avenue.
The four schools are organised along spacious pedestrian concourses radiating from the promenade and sheltered by upper levels of accommodation. The spatial organisation optimises vertical and horizontal movement, with the most densely used spaces such as lecture theatres situated on, or below, concourse level. Each school has its own student canteen overlooking the park.
Contrasting landscapes of the Plaza Parterre, triangular garden and open park land surrounding the schools and recreational facilities, ensure a variety of experiences, a sense of orientation and unify the campus. Clusters of large trees shade the buildings, parking and outdoor study areas. Spaces between and beneath the buildings create air movement across pedestrian zones.
