Situated on a magnificent site with frontages to the sea and to the Padang and Civic District of the City, the Arts Centre is conceived as a multi-activity complex for the staging of a wide variety of artistic activities. A unique assembly of forms and spaces contains five performance auditoria: an 1800 seat Concert Hall, 2000 seat Lyric Theatre, 850 seat Medium Theatre, 450 seat Adaptable Theatre and 250 seat Development Studio, together with several outdoor performance spaces and promenade routes. Rounded architectural forms contain the three primary auditoria, echoing the roof shapes particular to the region. Their all-enveloping facade system changes pattern to suit the orientation, providing solar shading and controlling the internal environment of the pavilions.
